A beginner's guide to dildos

They say classics never go out of style, and if there's one classic in the world of sex toys it's the dildo. Did you know dildos have been dug up that archaeologists believe are over 30,000 years old? Yep, those cavemen knew how to get kinky.
But times have changed since then, and the world of dildos is a little bigger (if you know what we mean) and there's a lot more variety to choose from.

New to the wonderful world of dildos and not sure where to start? Well let us introduce you...

Anal dildos

Oh wow, straight into it. Anal dildos are for, yes you guessed it, anal play.

Anal toys can add a whole other dimension of pleasure to sex, and are the perfect way to introduce backdoor play before you work your way up to full anal sex. They're perfect for playing alone or with a partner.

For men, the P-spot - also known as the male G-spot - is located up there if you're looking to enhance your orgasm. Ladies, you may not have a second G-spot up there but there are hundreds of nerve endings, so it's guaranteed to feel good.

A word of warning before you go dabbling with dildos up your bum. Make sure you choose ones with a flared base. Unlike the vagina, the anus keeps on going and, if there isn't anything stopping it from moving too far, can slip all the way inside resulting in an embarrassing trip to A&E.

Realistic dildos

Could they actually be better than the real thing? We'll let you be the judge of that.

If you want your toy to both look and feel the part, then a realistic dildo is the perfect addition to your toy chest. Thick-feeling, soft materials and realistic design, we won't blame you if you struggle to spot the difference.

These bad boys come in all shapes and sizes, so you can pick your perfect penis.

Strap-ons and harnesses

Do you daydream of pegging? Then a strap-on and harness will be your new best friend.

Strap in for one hell of a wild ride. These allow for perfect penetration whether you're a straight or lesbian couple, and let you take anal play to a whole other level.

If you're taking a step up in bondage and BDSM play, particularly the area of role reversal, tip your toe into these waters. Strap-on play can be incredible intimate and sensual, but it also allows you to gain complete submission over your partner.

Double-ended dildos

Because two heads are better than one, right?

Turn your fantasy into a reality with a double-ended dildo. If you fancy double penetrating your partner with ease (something that many guys fantasise about) then this two-headed dream can help.

For same-sex couples looking to play together and come together, these are the perfect choice.

Large dildos

Is bigger always better? Again, we'll let you decide.

These bad boys aren't for the faint-hearted, but if you're looking to take your pleasure even further, then you've just found the perfect tool.

Long and girthy, large dildos can range from six to nine inches long, and are designed to hit spots inside you that you never even dreamed of. If you're brand new to dildos, consider working your way up to something larger than life, but don't worry, they're here when you're ready.

Dildo materials

The material of your new best friend isn't something that should be skipped over, as it can make a huge difference to how it feels when you use it. There's no 'perfect' or 'best' material - it's all about personal preference and what feels good for you.

Silicone

Firm, yet flexible - two things you definitely want in a dildo. Silicone is a great material for beginners as it's smooth and soft and won't feel too "strange". Medical grade silicone is safe to use with your body and safe with most lubes - just steer clear of silicone-based ones as these can damage your toys.

Glass

Raised your eyebrows at this one? Don't. Glass dildos look good and feel even better - they're almost a work of art.

They're a little harder than other materials, making them ideal for some targeted G-spot stimulation.

What's more, they can even be heated up under warm running warm or cooled down in the freezer if you're tickled by the thought of some sensation play. This is something you won't get from others on the market.

If you're worried about them shattering inside of you, then don't. Glass dildos aren't made from your ordinary drinking glass, but rather from borosilicate glass which is very durable. They can stand up to 3,000lb of pressure - so you can be sure they'll last the years and still be going strong.

Another benefit? They're really easy to clean.

Metal

If you're ready to step up your dildo game and play with something a little more advanced, metal dildos should be the next on your list. They are far heavier and harder than others, but they feel incredibly smooth. And that extra weight puts more pressure on your vaginal walls and G-spot. Need we say more?

Feeling educated? Get out there and play! We promise you won't regret it...
